Mining started in the mid 1800’s with minerals such as copper and PGM’s being some of the first minerals mined.
We then later discovered deposits of coal in the Mpumalanga and Limpopo area, hematite iron ore and manganese in the Northern cape, magnetite iron ore, vanadium and titanium in the Limpopo, North west and Mpumalanga province, more noticeably the gold boom that first started in Mpumalanga in areas such as Barberton then later in Johannesburg through the Witwaterand deposit and Diamonds in the Northen cape area.
